Rider Spotlight April 2012 - Linnea Eileen Wren

Name:  Linnea Eileen Wren

How long have you been riding?  I’ve been riding seriously for three and a half or four years.

How long have you been riding with Kim?  This July, it’ll be three years since I began riding with Kim!

Who do you ride currently and who have you ridden in the past?  I’ve just started riding Champ, and also Diamond. Champ is a big Oldenberg cross, a little bit goofy, but sweet and friendly. Diamond is a quarter horse, with the prettiest face. Before that I was riding Sassy, our pretty little paint. I’ve also ridden Johnny Cash, Max, Colonel, Lakota, Tazz, and Rusty. The best horses ever!

What is your horse riding history?  I loved horses from before I could talk, but I grew up in the city. We had a pony ring at our zoo, and every time we went to the zoo, I got to go on a pony ride. Then, for my fifth birthday, my mom took me for a real horseback ride. Just she and I, and the guide, riding in the woods in the Pacific Northwest. At the end of the ride my horse, Tony, saw the barn, and broke into a gallop – I thought I’d died and gone to heaven!

Tell us a little about your current mount.  Champ is a big, beautiful liver chestnut. He’s five years old, and is just a big kid sometimes, but quite a gentleman, very well behaved and cooperative. He loves to be scratched on his withers, and wants to be friends with all the other horses.

What is your favorite discipline(s)?  I don’t think I have a favorite discipline, though I tend to prefer Western riding. In my years with Kim, I’ve learned how much real equitation there is in riding Western properly, and for me that means the best of both the precision people associate with English style disciplines and the casual, fun-loving attitude people see in the Western riding world.

What is your favorite thing to do at the barn (other than riding)?  My favorite thing to do at the barn is hang out with the young friends I’ve made here, puttering around taking care of horses, and tagging along with Kim trying to soak up her forty years worth of knowledge and experience.

What is your favorite 2011 memory?  It’s hard to say. Having a lesson on Colonel stands out. Learning how to do emergency dismounts was awesome. Going for a weekend at the Country Inn and Stables was totally amazing. Truth be told, any day at the barn is a good day, and I’m pretty lucky day in and day out!

What are your 2012 riding goals?  I want to get improve my seat (doesn’t everyone!) and get more precision with my leg cues. I want to get better at understanding horses’ moods and behaviors, and become more calm and confident so that I a rider with whom horses can relax and trust.

What are your long term riding goals?  Long term – ride more! I hope to be healthy and fit enough to ride for many years to come!

What do you get out of spending time at Franklin Canyon Stables?  Riding with Kim, you become part of a community. We help and support each other, have fun together, the school age kids are like a whole set of nieces and nephews, and every day at the barn is a chance to spend time with people I care about and who care about me.

What do you get out of spending time with horses?  That’s another one that’s hard to answer. I just love them, everything about them, so being around them makes me happy, no matter what else is going on in my life, spending time around horses makes me forget my troubles.

Have you ever won any riding awards? If so, what?  No riding awards as yet, but that’s not why I do it anyway, so no worries!
