Rider Spotlight Nov 2016 - Kasara Monschke

Name:  Kasara

How long have you been riding?  How long have you been riding with Kim?

I begged my parents to start taking lessons when I was 8 and eventually persuaded them to buy me a horse at 11.  I rode frequently for the next 7 years until I left for college and then didn't ride at all for nearly 15 years before coming to ride with Kim.  I think I have been with Kim for about 5 years now.

What is your riding history?

I took lessons when I was younger primarily English, but some western as well and went to a few schooling shows for English pleasure during my high school years.  I did a lot of trail riding as well... I lived 10 miles from my trainer and used to ride back and forth a lot since I didn't have a trailer, arena, or anyone else to ride with nearer to my house.

Who do you ride currently and who have you ridden in the past?

I have been very lucky and gotten to ride some amazing horses that have each taught me a lot!  I started out riding Johnny Cash (my first love!) who was an excellent and patient teacher that helped me work on building back my confidence as a rider - I didn't want to give him up, but eventually Kim persuaded me to move on.  Next I rode Diamond, who was beautiful and had a lot of training - a little more of a Diva than Johnny Cash though.  After that, I got to ride Cooper who had training as a reigning horse and could spin a perfect circle - He was a sweet and sensitive guy and a ton of fun to ride!  I currently ride Diesel.

Tell a little about your current mount:

Diesel is a big powerful beast that can be stubborn at times and a bit of a bully if he thinks he can get away with it, but he also has a super sweet side and is a very hard worker.  There is still a ton that he has to teach me and I am looking forward to getting to know him better and continuing to grow with him.

What is your favorite discipline(s)?

I like a little bit of everything: English, western, arena work and trail - I guess I would have to say I am happiest when I feel like I am connecting with my mount and we are working together and growing as a team and improving in whatever area we are working.

What is your favorite thing to do at the barn (other than riding)?

I like the other barn people and getting to see everyone else grow and improve.  I love watching the littlest kids ride too - and to see how patient the horses are with the new riders.

What is your favorite 2016 memory?

I have lots!  It was fun getting to see Diesel do both Dressage and Gymkhana this summer - he was a power house speed-racer at barrels, and a total gentleman in the dressage arena.

What are your 2017 riding goals?

Continuing to work on getting to know Diesel better and competing in the next level up at the next dressage show we go to.  I am also going to be riding some other horses to push myself out of my comfort zone and learn to be a more adaptable rider.

What are your long term riding goals?

For me, riding is about improving both the horse and myself and how we work together regardless of what we are doing - if I am doing that, I am happy.  I guess ideally, I would like to continue to become a better, more confident rider, improve my ability to read the horse I am riding and become less reactive - basically, I would like to become a horse-whisperer like Kim. ;)

What do you get out of spending time at Franklin Canyon Stables?

It has reconnected me with my lifelong love affair with horses!

What do you get out of spending time with horses?

They are amazing animals that are a constant challenge but also have so much to give back - I find it incredibly rewarding.  Also, a ride up the trail on a warm breezy summer night is the best way to de-stress and end a long day in the office!

Have you ever won any riding/show awards?  If so, what?

Diesel and I won two blue ribbons at our last dressage show and scored a 78% in one of our classes.

Name:  Kaylee Duncan

How long have you been riding?  How long have you been riding with Kim?

For about 6 years, 3 with Kim.

What is your riding history?

I started off taking a few classes at another local barn, but there wasn't a strong community there so my mom and I found Franklin Canyon and I fell in love with the place.

Who do you ride currently and who have you ridden in the past?

I currently ride Bronson, but in the past I have ridden Lakota and JJ.

Tell a little about your current mount:

Bronson is a great horse, he has lots of training but takes more of an intermediate to advanced rider to keep him in check. He has a tendency to get nervous, but when he does try and ignore it, he doesn't like being coddled.

What is your favorite discipline(s)?

My favorite disciplines are Barrel Racing and trail riding.

What is your favorite thing to do at the barn (other than riding)?

All my best friends ride at the barn, so just spending time with them.

What is your favorite 2015 memory?

My favorite 2015 memory is when we were horse camping and it was freezing cold but everyone still wanted to go and swim in the lake. We didn't bring enough towels to everyone had to share and we all froze but it was still so fun swinging on the rope swing and creating a memory I won't soon be forgetting.

What are your 2016 riding goals?

My hope is to compete at State this year and maybe win a buckle for barrel racing.

I want to one day own my own therapeutic riding enter for kids with disabilities.

What do you get out of spending time with horses?

I get to be loved and show love, there is no greater feeling than walking up to your horse and having him nicker at you. When you gain a horses trust you have a special bond with them. I love how they make me feel free when I ride them, in those moments nothing else matters.

Have you ever won any riding/show awards?  If so, what?

Yes, I've won a few ribbons in gymkhana.

Off and on since I was 7.  So like...forever.  I have been riding with Kim for 2 years.

When I was younger I rode primarily English. At summer camp I learned vaulting, bareback and dressage.  When  I entered my 20’s I started jumping then quit  to work and have kids.

Who do you ride currently and who have you ridden in the past?

I ride the most beautiful Appaloosa named Bronson.  In the past was Lakota for a year and a half. Also Cali, Blu, Lizzy, Johnny Cash, Champ.

What is your favorite discipline(s)?

I love them all.  I am always up for a new challenge and ready to tackle it all.

What is your favorite thing to do at the barn (other than riding)?

Spending time up there with the kids and the horses and learning new things every day.  It is such an amazing family up there.

What is your favorite 2015 memory?

Probably watching all the kids grow.  A lot of them changed horses.  My most memorable was actually watching Heather at a show with Cookie trying to do hurry scurry.  I watched her work for 3 minutes to get that horse to go through the cones and then to get over the jumps.  She never gave up.  She kept working and trying and staying strong and not giving up and letting the horse win.  It showed me just how much growth she had and I was so proud of her accomplishment.

If not then mine is bonding with Bronson at State for 5 days.  It was a huge turning point in our relationship.  I was actually able to get a breast collar on him.

What are your 2016 riding goals?

To make Bronson the most perfect horse so that he used in horsemanship and be perfect for anyone on the trail.  To buckle #1 in Division 6 this year at SOC.

What are your long term riding goals?

To be able to ride all horses with all disciplines, english, western, bareback. pony horses.

What do you get out of spending time at Franklin Canyon Stables?

So much happiness.  I always come home happy.  I have so many daughters now and I love them all.  I have some amazing friends and it is a true happy place to be.

What do you get out of spending time with horses?

Contentment, happiness. Whenever I am having a bad day all I have to do is be there and my mood changes to pure joy.  I feel like a little girl again.

Have you ever won any riding/show awards?  If so, what?

This year I took Reserve Champion in Division 7 on Bronson.  I also just won High Point award for all Appaloosas at SOC.

There are honestly too many fun memories that I have at the barn, but the State 2014 Show of Champions was a super fun experience because everyone who competed did amazing and I placed within my division. The barn has made me who I am today. It has provided me with great role models as well as great freinds in a place where I can have fun while learning, working, and teaching.

What do you get out of spending time with horses?

Riding is an amazing thing for me. Every time I ride it's like a stress reliever and being able to communicate with a horse will always be an amazing thing to me. Riding different horses and working on new things also gives me new goals to work toward.

Have you ever won any riding/show awards?  If so, what?

I was the First Lady in Waiting 2014 for Contra Costa County Horsemen's Association and I was the State Champion of Division 3 in 2012 and the State Champion of Division 5 in 2013 and I placed 5th in Division 4 in 2014.
