Rider Spotlight December 2015 - Kaylee Duncan

Name:  Kaylee Duncan

How long have you been riding?  How long have you been riding with Kim?

For about 6 years, 3 with Kim.

What is your riding history?

I started off taking a few classes at another local barn, but there wasn't a strong community there so my mom and I found Franklin Canyon and I fell in love with the place.

Who do you ride currently and who have you ridden in the past?

I currently ride Bronson, but in the past I have ridden Lakota and JJ.

Tell a little about your current mount:

Bronson is a great horse, he has lots of training but takes more of an intermediate to advanced rider to keep him in check. He has a tendency to get nervous, but when he does try and ignore it, he doesn't like being coddled.

What is your favorite discipline(s)?

My favorite disciplines are Barrel Racing and trail riding.

What is your favorite thing to do at the barn (other than riding)?

All my best friends ride at the barn, so just spending time with them.

What is your favorite 2015 memory?

My favorite 2015 memory is when we were horse camping and it was freezing cold but everyone still wanted to go and swim in the lake. We didn't bring enough towels to everyone had to share and we all froze but it was still so fun swinging on the rope swing and creating a memory I won't soon be forgetting.

What are your 2016 riding goals?

My hope is to compete at State this year and maybe win a buckle for barrel racing.

What are your long term riding goals?

I want to one day own my own therapeutic riding enter for kids with disabilities.

What do you get out of spending time at Franklin Canyon Stables?

I have learned how to be a mature young adult.  Kim teaches you to be confident and come out of your shell.  I used to be pretty shy and now I'm a completely different person. I can carry on conversations and be a functioning part of our society.

What do you get out of spending time with horses?

I get to be loved and show love, there is no greater feeling than walking up to your horse and having him nicker at you. When you gain a horses trust you have a special bond with them. I love how they make me feel free when I ride them, in those moments nothing else matters.

Have you ever won any riding/show awards?  If so, what?

Yes, I've won a few ribbons in gymkhana.
